Should former President Donald Trump opt against a White House bid in 2024, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis would hold a large majority of support from Alabama GOP primary voters.

According to a Cygnal poll commissioned by Alabama Daily News and Gray Television, 71.2% of Republican voters in the Yellowhammer State would choose DeSantis as their preferred 2024 presidential nominee.

The poll shows that former Vice President Mike Pence would come in at a distant second to the Florida governor, with 7.1% of support among Alabama’s GOP electorate.

Should Trump decide to seek the 2024 nomination, however, the 45th president tops DeSantis 49.6% to 35.7%.

Other potential candidates included in the poll were U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), North Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

As previously reported by Yellowhammer News, DeSantis’ gubernatorial reelection bid had received $60,355 from Alabama donors as of July 2022. Spanning from Mobile to Muscle Shoals, the governor had garnered a total of 1,139 campaign contributions from Yellowhammer State residents.
