Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” which says that a baby born after an attempted abortion is considered a “legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States.” It also requires doctors to provide “reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioners would render to any other child born alive.”
The bill passed by a vote of 220-210, with all of the “no” votes coming from Democrats.
Thursday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program,” U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said he found it “amazing” that Democrats voted against it.
“I just think they’re so deluded in their thinking about children,” Palmer said. “In this case, we’re not talking about unborn children, we’re talking about a child that survives an attempted abortion … it’s just unimaginable cruelty. At the point that the child comes into the world and takes a breath, it’s no longer an abortion, it’s infanticide.”
The congressman said under this law, a baby born alive after an attempted abortion will be treated like any other individual who’s suffering from a life-threatening injury.
“The hospitals would be required to provide that,” he said “If you’re coming in with a life-threatening injury, they don’t make you sit in the lobby and make you fill out insurance forms. They’re required to immediately provide the treatment that you need to save your life. The same thing with this baby, they’re required under this law.”
The lawmaker said he’s frustrated that the bill will not get any support from the Democratic leadership in the Senate.
“I doubt that Schumer will allow this to come up in the Senate,” he said. “Which again, this is beyond any discussion about right to life or the right to an abortion. This is outside the abortion issue. It’s whether or not once a child has come into the world does it have rights, and I argue that it does. I think it has rights before it comes into the world frankly.”
Palmer posted a statement on Twitter about his “yes” vote, saying he’s “proud” of the GOP for bringing the bill to the floor.
