Wahl: ALGOP ‘not taking for granted’ state supermajority

Alabama Republicans control all statewide constitutional offices, have a supermajority in the Legislature, and hold eight out of nine federal seats.

Even as Republicans dominate in-state politics, the Alabama Republican Party will be unrelenting in its efforts to ensure that remains the case, according to Chairman John Wahl.

Wahl recently returned from a four-day trip to the nation’s capital, where state GOP leaders met to map out the party’s 2022 election priorities.

In a statement, the ALGOP chairman detailed the party’s commitment to ensuring in-state and out-of-state Republican candidates’ success in the current election cycle.

“The Alabama Republican Party is ready to help our candidates at home, as well as around the country,” said Wahl in a release. “We won’t be sitting on the sidelines taking our state’s supermajority for granted. We’ve been working hard for the people of Alabama, and doing our part to help partners in other states so we can take back the U.S. House and Senate.

“Too much is at stake, and we must do all we can to restore America and reign in the out-of-control liberal policies of the Biden Administration.”

During the trip, Wahl and the National Republican Senatorial Committee finalized campaign plans. ALGOP and the NRSC have collaborated as part of a joint fundraising committee, which aims to bolster U.S. Senate candidates around the nation.

“The ALGOP has been working hard to make sure our candidates have the resources they need,” he said. “Republicans have the opportunity to flip several seats this year, and I hope our joint fundraising committee will play an important role in gaining a majority in the U.S. Senate.”

In meetings with the Republican National Committee, Wahl discussed ALGOP’s efforts to support Georgia GOP U.S. Senate nominee Herschel Walker in his bid to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.).

“It’s exciting to have so many volunteers from across the state of Alabama joining in the fight to take back the Senate in 2022. This election cycle is going to be critical if we have any chance to save our economy and restore the America we know and love,” said Wahl. “Herschel Walker is a special candidate, who understands the American dream and the struggles facing the middle class because of bad government decisions. He has energized people across the country with his common sense conservative message, and we look forward to helping him win this November.”

“We had the opportunity to review election forecast data, and really look at how we can best help our candidates. It’s so important that we know where to best spend our resources – both financial and boots on the ground.”

ALGOP’s financial preparations for the 2022 midterm elections have been underway since last year.

The party, under Wahl’s leadership, set a single-day fundraising record of $1.1 million during ALGOP’s August 2021 rally in Cullman that hosted former President Donald Trump.

Alongside its fundraising efforts, ALGOP launched a minority outreach coalition last October to target a voting bloc that has been traditionally favorable to Democrats.

State Rep. Kenneth Paschal (R-Pelham), who serves as director of the coalition, made history last year as he became the first Black Republican since Reconstruction to be elected to the Legislature.

According to ALGOP, the party will be targeting more than 40 candidates to increase its political dominance in the Yellowhammer State.
