Tuberville slams Democrats’ voting reform bill as ‘trojan horse’ to ‘federalize’ elections — ‘No one’s right to vote has been taken away’

As the U.S. Senate appears poised to take up legislation to add federal standards to the voting process, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala) is sounding the alarm over what he asserted to be the implications of their measures.

Senate Democrats seek to combine portions of two House-approved bills, the “Freedom to Vote Act” and the “John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”

During his weekly press call, Tuberville suggested that Democrats’ efforts to pass their so-called voting rights legislation was disguised as a “trojan horse” in an attempt to “federalize” the elections process.

“Last week, the House passed their version of legislation that would federalize our elections. House Democrats’ bill combines two radical pieces of legislation which aim to eliminate voter ID requirements, allow noncitizens to vote, and make it easier to cheat in elections,” said Tuberville. “Now, Democrats in the Senate will take up these two bills as one under the trojan horse of voting rights. Democrats will say the voting rights of Americans are under fire and Washington, D.C. is the solution. They will go on to say that anyone who disagrees with their bill does not support the right to vote. This could not be farther from the truth.”

Alabama’s junior senator went on to declare that no American who sought to legally participate in the electoral process had been denied their constitutional right to vote. Tuberville cited the fact that more Americans participated in the 2020 election than any election prior.

“Let me be clear: Every American has the legal right to vote. But the Democrats are trying to pull the wool over Americans’ eyes,” Tuberville proclaimed. “No one’s right to vote has been taken away. 94% of Americans said voting was easy, and turnout for the 2020 election was at an all-time high. The Democrats’ bill does not add or restore any rights. It simply puts Washington, D.C. in charge of states’ elections. States should be free to run their elections in a way that works best for them.”
