University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban on Sunday confirmed that star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high-ankle sprain in Saturday’s win against Tennessee.
In a statement, Saban said it is “the same injury, but the opposite ankle that [Tagovailoa] injured last season.”
Tagovailoa underwent “a successful tight-rope procedure on his right ankle” on Sunday morning, according to Saban.
The quarterback will miss this coming week’s game against Arkansas but Saban anticipates “a full and speedy recovery.”
The No. 1 Tide (7-0) have a bye-week following that matchup and then host LSU on November 9.
According to linebacker Terrell Lewis, Tagovailoa told his teammates in the locker room on Saturday night that he will be back from the injury to play against LSU.
Tagovailoa had this same surgical procedure on his left ankle last season in the final portion of the season. Tight rope surgery is utilized to speed up the recovery process.
Saban stated, “Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high-ankle sprain last night against Tennessee. Our physicians performed a successful tight-rope procedure on his right ankle this morning. This is the same injury, but the opposite ankle that Tua injured last season. Tua will miss next week’s game against Arkansas, but we expect a full and speedy recovery.”
