The World Games is an even bigger deal than you think

They call it The World Games for a reason.

With more than 3,600 athletes from over 100 countries competing in nearly three dozen sports, The World Games is an international athletic and entertainment spectacle.

And it is all happening right here in Alabama from July 7 through 17 during the Summer of 2022.

The Yellowhammer State will take center stage for the internationally televised event which has in the past been hosted by Great Britain, Japan, Germany, Finland, Poland, Netherlands and other far away places around the globe.

Over the course of 11 days, more than 600 medals will be awarded to competing athletes. The Games represent the highest level of competition in softball, bowling, gymnastics, martial arts, roller sports, water skiing, archery, climbing and many more sports, including the games’ first-ever para-sport: wheelchair rugby.

The biggest winner of all? Alabama.

With thousands of athletes, fans and media descending on the state, The World Games project to generate a $256 million economic impact for Alabama.

The international event will unite global fans with the Birmingham community in 25+ unique venues around the greater metropolitan area.  Event locations announced to date include Birmingham Crossplex, Boutwell Auditorium, Legion Field and the new Protective Stadium.

The City of Birmingham won its bid to host The Games in 2015, beating out cities in Russia and Peru. This edition marks a return of The Games to the United States for the first time since the inaugural event in Santa Clara, California in 1981.

The World Games 2022 will be a transformational opportunity for Alabama, generating global media exposure, welcoming athletes and fans from around the world, and serving as a catalyst to position Birmingham as a host for future events.
