Six Bama football players, one Troy star named to Walter Camp preseason All-America teams

The Walter Camp Football Foundation on Thursday announced its 2020 preseason All-American teams.

Walter Camp, nicknamed “The Father of American football,” first began selecting an All-America team in 1889. His namesake foundation was formed in 1967 to continue the tradition of selecting an annual All-America team, which is the nation’s oldest.

The 2020 preseason version of the annual team featured six University of Alabama players: one on the first team and five on the second team. Additionally, Troy University landed a first team selection. No other Alabama-based institutions had selections.

The six total Crimson Tide selections were the most from any one school.

Senior wide receiver DeVonta Smith was selected to the first team offense.

The second team honorees for Bama were seniors Najee Harris (running back) and Alex Leatherwood (offensive line) on the offensive side of the ball, with juniors Dylan Moses (linebacker) and Patrick Surtain II (defensive back) representing the defense.

Junior wideout/return specialist Jaylen Waddle was also named as a preseason second team honoree as a kickoff returner. Waddle was named to the 2019 All-America second team by the foundation following last season.

For the Trojans, junior linebacker Carlton Martial of Mobile, Alabama, was named to the first team defense.

A former walk-on, Martial was named as a freshman All-American by several outlets in 2018. He was named to the Pro Football Focus All-America second team for the 2019 season.
