WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that he will oppose each of the upcoming votes pertaining to the continuing resolution for fiscal year 2014, and will vote “no” on any attempt to fund the president’s healthcare law.
Shelby says the current continuing resolution ignores the spending caps put in place by the Budget Control Act, which was passed into law in 2011.
“Congress should fund the government at a level consistent with current law,” Shelby said.” Unfortunately, this bill blatantly violates clear spending limits in the Budget Control Act. I will therefore oppose it at all points in the legislative process.”
Shelby also pledged to oppose any attempts to fund the so-called Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as ObamaCare. In September of 2011, as the top Republican on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education; Shelby first offered an amendment to strike funding to implement ObamaCare in the committee’s spending bill for fiscal year 2012. The amendment was defeated on a party-line vote.
“I will also firmly oppose any attempt to fund ObamaCare,” he said. “This law is a job killer that will destroy the most advanced and innovative health care system on earth. It is a monumental waste of taxpayer dollars.
“Our nation is $17 trillion in debt and millions of Americans remain out of work,” Shelby continued. “To get our economy back on track, we must control spending and stop ObamaCare. I reject this legislation because it will ultimately do neither.”
