Schuyler Espy to serve as Alabama Pulp and Paper Council executive director

Manufacture Alabama on Tuesday announced that attorney Schuyler Espy would serve as the Alabama Pulp and Paper Council’s (APPCO) next executive director.

Espy will replace current executive director Roy McAuley, who is set to retire at the end of the year after serving the council for more than two decades.

Espy, an attorney with Burr & Forman, has spent her career in private practice counseling clients on environmental and regulatory matters.

According to a release, her work has included matters relating to permitting and compliance for the construction and operation of environmentally regulated facilities. Schuyler is also experienced in administrative and judicial environmental enforcement proceedings.

Espy previously served as an associate general counsel and assistant attorney general at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) for 11 years. Her career has focused on the areas of environmental regulation and compliance, among other related legal policy issues.

In a statement announcing the appointment, Manufacture Alabama president George Clark asserted that Espy’s background would serve to benefit APPCO and the trade association.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Schuyler to the Manufacture Alabama team,” expressed Clark. “She has a rich technical background and will bring a wealth of environmental expertise to APPCO and the members of Manufacture Alabama.”

Randy McRae, chairman of the APPCO governmental affairs committee, advised that Espy’s expertise would help spur growth within Alabama’s pulp and paper industry.

“Schuyler Espy brings a remarkable background and skill set to lead APPCO into the future,” stated McRae. “The pulp and paper industry continues to grow and invest in Alabama. Schuyler’s leadership will be vital in serving and guiding APPCO’s member companies in the regulatory and government relations arenas. We are delighted to welcome her aboard.”

Manufacture Alabama advised that Espy would take the lead on numerous environmental issues and provide guidance to the association’s membership.

Espy expressed appreciation to the association for entrusting her with the role of executive director.

“The services provided by Manufacture Alabama and APPCO are essential to manufacturers and their partner industries in Alabama,” said Espy. “I am thankful for this opportunity and honored to be joining such a distinguished group.”

Espy will join Manufacture Alabama in a transitional role in September while Roy McAuley continues serving as executive director through the end of the year, according to the association. Espy will serve in the role of APPCO executive director on a contract basis.
