Saban blasts media on QB situation — ‘Make up whatever you want’

Alabama head coach Nick Saban seemingly never shies away from correcting a media narrative that he believes falsely represents his program.

During his weekly Monday press conference, Saban was asked if he planned to install offensive packages tailored uniquely to backup quarterback Jalen Milroe given Bryce Young’s day-to-day status as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

“We already have one,” responded Saban. “Do you want us to put a new one together now just because he might play or use an old one? We can do either one. I mean, I’ll go talk to the offensive coaches and see.”

When asked a follow-up question regarding his offense’s potential use of a Milroe-centered package in Saturday’s matchup against Texas A&M, Saban slammed reporting that suggested he was keeping his quarterback situation under wraps.

“I don’t talk to Jimbo (Fisher) on a regular basis, but I’ll call him and tell him right after the conference if you want me to,” quipped Saban. “Do you guys think we’re going to tell you what we’re going to do with our offense and our team? You might as well make it up. I saw today where there are headlines in the paper that, you know, I’m going to keep it a secret what we’re going to do with Bryce.”

The agitated Crimson Tide coach lamented that the reporting “sounded like me making that statement,” and advised that he “never said that.”

“But it was there in black and white. So you can make up whatever you want to make up,” said Saban. “Look at someone else’s running quarterback and say they should put these plays in. I think that’d be a better way to do it.”

Alabama and Texas A&M will face off in Bryant-Denny Stadium at 7:00 Saturday evening, which will air on CBS as the network’s featured primetime SEC game.
