Rep. Carl: Military Appreciation Month

U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl

In 1775, the Continental Congress created the United States Army to fight the British and gain independence for what would become the United States of America. The U.S. Army was obviously successful, and we are still grateful to them nearly 250 years later.

Today, the United States military is the largest employer in the world. The U.S. military not only keeps us safe and free, but also conducts important studies that have led to the invention of many useful technologies we take for granted, such as the GPS, canned food, and jet engines.

The jobs done by our military personnel have changed quite a bit since 1775, but the one thing that has remained the same is our military is still the greatest fighting force in the world. Our men and women in uniform work tirelessly to ensure our nation remains free and safe from threats both domestically and internationally.

That’s why in 1999, Military Appreciation Month was formally introduced in the United States Congress.

From May 1 to May 31, we honor everyone who has served in any branch of the U.S. military and highlight the many important military anniversaries in our nation’s history.

May is a great month for military remembrance since the month includes Victory in Europe Day, which marks the end of World War II in Europe in 1945, Children of Fallen Patriots Day, the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden, and Memorial Day when we honor all the veterans who have died in service to our country.

One of the biggest reasons why I ran for Congress was so I could do more to help our veterans, reservists, and active duty servicemembers. To all the active and reserve members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard, it’s the honor of a lifetime to serve you.

If I or my office can ever be of service to you or your family, please do not hesitate to contact us online at Carl.House.Gov or by calling my office at 202-225-4931.

Jerry Carl represents Alabama’s First Congressional District. He lives in Mobile with his wife Tina.
