McMillan resigns as state treasurer, will head state’s Medical Cannabis Commission; Ivey appoints Boozer to serve remainder of term

State Treasurer John McMillan (R-AL) tendered his resignation to Gov. Kay Ivey (R-AL) as the longtime public servant will take on the role of executive director for the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission.

In May, the governor signed legislation legalizing medical marijuana and established the commission which will regulate the use of medicinal cannabis in the state.

McMillan’s resignation will become effective September 30.

Ivey sang McMillan’s praises and his willingness to continue his service to the state and offered her support of him in his new position.

“I commend Treasurer McMillan for his diligent service to the state of Alabama and wish him well in his new endeavor,” said Ivey. “His credentials prove he is more than qualified, but he is also a man of integrity. I have full confidence he will bring transparency and professionalism to his new role.”

McMillan is a former Baldwin County commissioner and state representative. He previously served as the Alabama Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources. Additionally, McMillan served as vice president of the Alabama Forestry Association (AFA) and Commissioner of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industry.

The long-serving statesman reflected on his tenure as state treasurer and said he is excited about his upcoming role.

“It has been an honor to serve the state of Alabama as Treasurer, and I am incredibly proud of the accomplishments and steady efforts of the great team I’ve had the pleasure of working with these past several years,” said McMillan. “I look forward to the new challenge of leading the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission and will commit to providing the same level of dedication to this role as I’ve done in every other aspect of my career.”

Completing the remainder of McMillan’s term is former State Treasurer Young Boozer, who will assume the position effective October 1.

In announcing her appointment of Boozer, the governor hailed his former service in the position.

“I’m pleased to appoint Young Boozer as Alabama State Treasurer,” stated Ivey. “I could not think of anyone more qualified or better suited to fill the remainder of John’s term. Young knows the role, knows our state and will immediately be able to get to work. I appreciate his willingness to serve our state in this important position once again.”

Boozer thanked Ivey for the confidence she has placed in him to fulfill the role in which he formerly served.

“I’m honored and grateful Governor Ivey would ask me to serve in this important position once again,” said Boozer. “I will hit the ground running and do my best to serve the good people of this great state.”
