Maddox shares video of supporter claiming no Republican ‘has ever done anything good for people’

In what would seem to be an abandonment of Democratic gubernatorial nominee and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox’s attempt at branding himself as a centrist who puts people over party, Maddox on Monday sent out a video on his personal Twitter of a supporter saying, “no Republican that I know has ever done anything good for people.”

The video features a Maddox supporter, with the last name Cleveland, who is 94 years old.

“I am an absolute straight Democrat,” Mr. Cleveland states at the beginning of the video.

Cleveland then praises Democratic successes of the far, far past, including New Deal policies from the 1930’s. This is a striking contrast to Maddox’s claim that he is the candidate of the future and also opens the Democrat up to links with the party’s sordid past transgressions, since Cleveland is praising its past achievements.

When asked by a woman off-camera why he believes in Walt Maddox, Cleveland answers, “I believe in him because he is an aggressive Democrat, he’s had experience in Tuscaloosa and he is appealing to me, and no Republican that I know has ever done anything good for people and for the ordinary people and I believe he will.”

In the caption accompanying the video, Maddox said, “Now this is someone who believes!”

Maddox has used the theme of believing (#believe) for his campaign, so his tweet seemingly comes as an embrace of the sentiments in the polarizing video.
