Jordan secures all Alabama GOP votes for Speaker

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan moved his bid for Speaker of the House forward by securing the endorsements of key members of the House Republican Conference, who happen to represent Alabama.

Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), a personal friend and fellow Freedom Caucus member with Jordan (R-Ohio), was the first to publicly announce his support, shortly after former Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted as Speaker.

After initially saying there was “nothing” Jordan could do to earn his support, citing fundamental disagreements over substance and policy, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) formally endorsed Jordan’s bid for Speaker on Monday.

The latest endorsement rolled out, which secured Alabama’s GOP delegation for Jordan, was Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) who announced his support at a press conference in Huntsville.

Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) endorsed Jordan last week, saying his record as a conservative is “unquestioned.”

Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) said he voted for Jordan in the private conference ballot last week and will do it again when he’s on the floor for a vote.

Going into the weekend, Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said he told Jordan he’d have his support.

The endorsement pick-up by Rogers was heavily reported by Washington outlets, as it marked a notable compromise on spending priorities, such as the National Defense Authorization Act, which will quickly follow the election of a new Speaker.

In a conference vote Friday, Jordan secured his nomination in a 124-81 vote. However, when the conference was put to the question of supporting the nomination on the floor, it yielded a 152-55 result, short of the 217 votes needed to win in the first round.
