Ivey tours Jefferson County tornado damage, receives call from Biden

Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday toured areas in Northern Jefferson County that were hit hard by severe weather on Monday evening.

Before assessing damage both on the ground and via helicopter, Ivey held a press conference in Fultondale, which was devastated by an EF-3 tornado. At least one teenager was killed and 30 people were injured in the area.

The governor was joined Wednesday by Fultondale Mayor Larry Holcomb, Center Point Mayor Bobby Scott, Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Jeff Coker and Alabama EMA Director Brian Hastings.

Following the tour, Ivey’s office announced that President Joe Biden called the governor on Wednesday afternoon.

“President Biden called me to check in on Alabama following Monday’s severe weather,” said Ivey in a statement. “I shared with him what we saw today, both from the air and on the ground. While the recovery will be tough, these communities are united. This is what makes Alabama so special.”

Ivey has pledged that the local communities affected will have all available resources at their disposal while recovering.

“I have reached out to Fultondale Mayor Holcomb and Center Point Mayor Scott and have pledged to them any support or resources that are available,” Ivey advised on Tuesday. “To the Alabamians gravely affected by this round of severe weather, I am with you. We will get through this.”
