Honda, Hyundai pause production at Alabama plants

Automotive manufacturers Honda and Hyundai are stopping production at their plants in Alabama, according to media reports on Wednesday.

WSFA is reporting that the Hyundai plant in Montgomery has had an employee test positive for COVID-19. The facility’s production halted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Honda’s production break extends to all of its plants in North America. It will begin on March 23 and last six days. Honda has a manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Alabama.

Hyundai said in a statement to WSFA that it “has already deployed additional sanitation measures across the entire facility and will now follow ADPH’s protocols for disinfecting the affected work area.”

The company added that it “will confer with ADPH and the CDC to determine if additional measures should be taken.”

Hyundai concluded that once their “environment, health, and safety team has determined that the affected area has been sufficiently sanitized and production is safe to resume, our team members will be informed.”

Honda released a statement, saying, “As the market impact of the fast-changing COVID-19 situation evolves, Honda will continue to evaluate conditions and make additional adjustments as necessary. In undertaking this production adjustment, Honda is continuing to manage its business carefully through a measured approach to sales that aligns production with market demand.”
