GOP House delegation votes for Secure Border Act

The “Secure the Border Act of 2023” passed the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday, with every member of the Alabama Republican House Congressional delegation voting in favor of the bill.

Republicans are pushing the new law as a way to combat the current crisis at the border, one that is being exacerbated the the ending of Title 42.

Provisions in the law:

  • Forces the Biden Administration to restart construction of the border wall
  • Deploys technology to the southern and northern border
  • Increases the number of Border Patrol agents and provide bonus pay
  • Requires transparency regarding illegal crossings from the Department of Homeland Security
  • Strengthens current law to protect unaccompanied children from human trafficking
  • Ends catch and release
  • Ends abuse of executive immigration authority
  • Strengthens and streamline the asylum process

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) said this is another example of Republicans keeping their promises.

U.S. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) released a statement saying this bill would solve the problems created by the Biden administration at the border.

“As Americans worry about their own future and safety, President Biden is allowing a record number of migrants to pour across our southern border, and his only solution is to drop them off on the street and beg them to turn themselves in to border patrol,” said Moore. “House Republicans are keeping our promises and offering a real solution to this crisis by passing the strongest border package in history.”

U.S. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) blames Biden for doing nothing to secure the border.

“President Biden has had two and a half years to fix the border crisis but has only made excuses,” Palmer said. “Today, House Republicans took action to stop the chaos that is currently on display at our southern border. The Secure the Border Act of 2023 delivers on our promise to the American people to secure the border because the safety of our country is our top priority.

“The Secure the Border Act of 2023 responds to the failed border policies of the Biden Administration. It funds more border patrol agents, resuming construction on the border wall, and demands transparency from the Department of Homeland Security. The time for talk is over. The President needs to stop willfully neglecting the border crisis and act with the best interest of Americans in mind.”

U.S. Rep. Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said House Republicans have done their job and called on Biden to do the same.

U.S. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) agreed with Aderholt that Republicans are doing their part to solve the problem.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) said “While the Biden administration sits idly by, [House GOP] is passing real solutions to the border crisis.”
