(Birmingham) Ted Crockett has qualified with the Alabama Republican Party to run as a candidate for State House District 45. In making his announcement, Crockett stated the biggest issues in this district are rising sewer rates in both Jefferson and Shelby Counties.
“Residents are paying ridiculously high sewer rates as high as $112 per month and this has to be taken under control. “Crockett has several ideas on how to address this very serious issue in both Jefferson and Shelby Counties.
In Shelby County, Crockett voted not to sell the North Shelby Sewer System. The sale led to runaway sewer rates in Greystone, Highland Lakes, Mount Laurel, Forest Park, Forest Lakes, and Chelsea, on all three sewer systems.
In addition, Crockett has plans developed from meetings in the House District 45 to address Highway 280, Cahaba Beach Road, and Grants Mill Road. Infastructure plans will also include Highways 459 and 20. “I have a proven record of solving problems,” said Crockett, referring to earlier terms on the Shelby County Commission. “I know how to negotiate and I know how to bring our tax dollars back home.”
Crockett was first elected Shelby County Commissioner in 1996 and re-elected two more terms with ever increasing winning percentages. During that time, Ted Crockett was known as the “go to man” for bringing infrastructure improvements to the area. During that twelve-year period, Crockett built Vandiver Park, Gorman Park in Vincent, installed tornado sirens in Dunnavant, Vandiver, Chelsea, and several other communities. He was a driving force behind purchasing Soccer Blast and building the soccer fields, as well as paving sixty three miles of dirt roads in rural areas of Shelby County.
Crockett was a leader in opposing and stopping numerous new apartment complexes in unincorporated Shelby County, and stopped Roosters Strip Club on Highway 280. He also worked with the Dunnavant Valley Greenway to zone the largest beat ever in Shelby County.
While serving on the Shelby County Hospital Board, Crockett voted for new management that led to the sale of the public hospital for $50 million dollars and reduced homestead property bills by four mils. “I never voted for a tax increase in those twelve years,” said Crockett. Crockett also voted to sunset the one cent sales tax, as promised.
“We need a State Representative who will fight for improvements to Highways 280, 459, and 20. Residents spend too much of their valuable time in traffic bottlenecks, some kids can easily spend two hours a day on buses and in cars to and from various schools”, said Crockett.
Ted Crockett was Vice Chairman of Shelby Medical Center 1989-1991; Board member of Briarwood Christian School 1996-1997; and Vice President of the Dunnavant Valley Greenway 1999-2017. He and his wife, Jamie Gaines Crockett, live in Greystone and are members of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, where Ted also serves as an Elder.
The Republican Primary will be held June 5, 2018.
