Andy Andrews, Alabamian and New York Times best-selling author of The Traveler’s Gift and The Noticer, has some powerful advice for self-improvement that is more simple than you might think.

The secret, according to Andrews, is to just be happy and reflect that happiness to the people around you.

“It made a huge difference in my marriage when I learned to brighten up when my wife walked in the room,” the author said.

In a video from his website, Andrews goes on to illustrate his point using an analogy about how he and his family dog Lucy treated his wife Polly.

Whenever his wife would walk into the room, Andrews said that he would often be busy and had no reaction at all. Lucy, however, became incredibly excited anytime Polly walked in, even if she had only been gone five minutes.

“Finally it hit me one day,” he said. “Maybe I should put a smile on my face when I talk to my wife.”

“Maybe if If I treat my wife as well as the dog treats my wife, maybe she’ll treat me as well as she treats the dog,” he concluded to laughter in the audience.

Andrew’s full message can be viewed in the YouTube video below.
