In the initial Republican primary election for Alabama Secretary of State on May 24, State Auditor Jim Zeigler garnered the most votes with 42.7%, leading State Rep. Wes Allen’s (R-Troy) 39.7%, Christian Horn’s 9.8% and Ed Packard’s 7.8%.
Since no candidate reached over 50% support from voters, the top two candidates will face each other in a runoff election on June 21.
Wednesday, Horn joined WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program to announce his endorsement of Allen for secretary of state.
“Today, I want to endorse Wes Allen for secretary of state,” he said. “I think, for me, there are some strong reasons why and I’ve gotten to know Wes very well over the past nine months or so, some of the values that we both represent in terms of policy have been pretty much mirrored across the way.”
Horn said Allen had proven himself to be someone who would keep Alabama’s elections secure.
“We need someone who is going to make us look good,” he continued, “and be someone that is going to hold the values of election day, hold the values of ensuring there are no mailbox drops for elections, to make certain that it’s election day and not election month.”
The former candidate also criticized Zeigler for accepting money from the Alabama Education Association (AEA).
“At the end, what really got me was the money donation from the AEA,” he said. “The AEA got involved in the race, in my race in April, and they heavily supported financially Mr. Zeigler and I found myself unable to do that because I fought against Critical Race Theory and the NEA and AEA have been, for the most part, the purveyors of Critical Race Theory.”
Horn emphasized that he could not support a candidate who was getting funding from a group that went against conservative values in Alabama.
“If someone wants to tell you that they want your endorsement,” he explained, “I look at who’s endorsing you, and when the AEA came in now you have an army of people who are really and truly not for the values that we support in education.”
He concluded that out of the two candidates in the runoff, Allen was the best man for the job.
“Wes is a great candidate,” he said. “He and I have agreed on a lot of the issues, some of the issues we don’t agree on, but I think for me, you know, we need a statesman. We need someone who is going to represent us here and everywhere, and I think he’s the guy for it.”
