Brooks: Trump, ‘not honest,’ alienated Republicans, independents

With Democratic candidate Cortez Masto being the projected winner in the U.S. Senate election in Nevada, Democrats have once again held the majority in the upper chamber.

The lack of a “red wave” in the midterm elections is causing some in the Republican party to point fingers at former President Donald Trump.

Monday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program,” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) discussed how he thinks Trump hurt Republicans’ chances to gain more seats in the recent election.

“Keep in mind that (Trump) did not keep his campaign promises to a very large degree from 2016 through 2017 and 2020,” Brooks said. “Keep in mind that he did such a bad job that he alienated so many Republicans and so many independents, and he motivated so many Democrats to vote that might have otherwise had just not made that extra effort to go to the polls, that we lost the House to Nancy Pelosi in 2018. Donald Trump lost to a candidate who campaigned in his basement in 2020, and we lost the Senate in 2020.”

The congressman believes the former president put his own interests ahead of the interests of the party and the country with things he said before last week’s election.

“(A) week before the election Donald Trump does the Donald Trump thing and lets the trial balloons float for about how he’s going to announce a presidential run, which in turn drives up Democrat turnout because they want to stop Trump,” Brooks said. “It gets the Democrat base excited to get to the polls and that hurts us in a lot of these close races causing us to lose the Senate even worse, and to not do anywhere near as well in the House where we should have.”

Brooks blasted Trump for not being truthful to him or the American people in the past few years.

“He’s not honest,” he said, “and someone might take umbrage with that; well, was he honest when he accused Ted Cruz’s father of participating in the assassination of John F. Kennedy? I hope most people would come to the correct conclusion – ‘no,’ Donald Trump just made it up out of thin air. He’s not been honest in my personal relationship with Donald Trump. Three different times he’s given me his word, either person to person or through an intermediary, that he would do or not do something and every single time he’s broken his word.”

Brooks also said Trump did not fulfill many of his original campaign promises.

“What was his number one campaign promise in 2016 that he was going to do and deliver? What was number one?” Brooks said. “Number one was build a wall and Mexico is going to pay for it. He never even gave us a bill, some legislation that would build the wall and require Mexico to pay for it. He was just spreading a yarn with the public because he knew the public wanted to hear that without any intent to actually require the second part of that commitment, and that was to have Mexico pay for it.

“He just made that up out of thin air. That’s not honest.”
