Auburn’s Lee achieves ‘phenomenal accomplishment’

At age 19, Auburn’s Suni Lee is already well-known throughout the world of gymnastics – internationally and collegiately.

In 2020, she was the Olympic all-around gymnastics gold medalist in Tokyo and was Sports Illustrated‘s Female Athlete of the Year in 2021.

Lee was the NCAA individual champion in the beam in 2022 to help the Tigers to a fourth-place team finish – its best ever at the NCAA Championships.

To say she is in rarified air is putting it mildly.

Last Friday in Tuscaloosa, the Auburn sophomore accomplished yet another tremendously impressive feat.

She scored not only one score of 10 from the judges, but two perfect 10s. The first came in one of her specialties, the uneven bars. The next 10 came later in the day on the beam – her second perfect score this season on the beam.

Auburn Head Gymnastics Coach Jeff Graba, spoke to Yellowhammer News about Lee’s latest accomplishment and the significance of scoring not one, but two 10s in one meet.

“Scoring a 10 in our sport is still pretty rare,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal accomplishment and I believe there are less than 20 total 10s in the history of Auburn gymnastics.

“It’s an incredibly impressive accomplishment and we are very proud of Suni.”

Lee has said that this year will be her last of collegiate competition. She plans to concentrate fully on professional gymnastics and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

A perfect ending.
