APT to provide scholarships for ‘Young Heroes of Alabama’

Alabama Public Television has announced that it will be selecting five “Young Heroes of Alabama” to each receive an academic scholarship worth $10,000.

To be nominated, according to APT, students should “excel in academics, give of themselves through public service, overcome adversity, inspire others through deeds, and display strength of character.”

Over the years, students recognized as “Young Heroes” have often overcome adversity such as illness, handicaps, family tragedy, or abuse.

This will be the first year that the scholarship values have increased to $10,000 each. Winners will also take home a laptop computer and other prizes. They will also be recognized at a special dinner ceremony in Montgomery and in the state House and Senate Chambers in April 2024.

Nominees must be Alabama residents who are not older than 18 and are still in school. The children’s parent or guardian must give permission for the nomination, along with permission for Alabama Public Television to use the child’s name or likeness on the air.

Entries can me made online at aptv.org/heroes and must be received by Jan. 26, 2024. The winners will be notified in March.

The winners of the scholarships last year were: Emily Cassity of Citronelle High School, Jacori Gaddis of Thompson High School in Alabaster, Ashton Goodloe of Central High School in Florence, Elyse Mae Dean of Pickens Academy in Carrollton, and Joshua Wortham of James Clemens High School in Madison.
