On Sunday night, women all over America went wild for Doody. That’s right, with a cast list that included Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, Vanessa Hudgens, and Carley Ray Jepsen, a character named Doody was the breakout star of Fox’s production of Grease: Live. Native Alabamian Jordan Fisher portrayed the classic character for the live production.
Long before he became a T-Bird at Rydell High, Fisher began singing and dancing at the Red Mountain Theater Company in Birmingham, AL. He moved out to Los Angeles in 2011 to begin his acting career. Fisher credits his time at Red Mountain to his success. He told AL.com in 2013 that growing up in Birmingham “gave me a sense of reality. I could not pick another city I would rather have grown up in. Growing up around really good, solid, Godly people, it helped me to find those kind of great people in LA, too, which can be hard for some people.”
Only 21 years old, Fisher has already found success singing and dancing in Disney’s Teen Beach Movie and its sequel. He has also had roles in Teen Wolf, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and more.
But it was his role as Doody in Grease: Live that has brought Fisher major attention. Twitter loved everything about him. Even critics, reporters, and major Broadway stars, like Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of the hit musical Hamilton) tweeted out their love for Fisher’s performance of “Those Magic Changes.”
Fisher remains in awe of the response to his performance, and he continues to make his mark in the entertainment industry. The day after Grease: Live, Fisher released an original song called “Counterfeit.” The success of Grease: Live has only confirmed what Fisher himself knew three years ago. “I know without a doubt I will be doing this for the rest of my life,” he said.” It makes me happy. I’m an artist through and through.”
