The Alabama Education Association (AEA) board of directors on Monday announced the unanimous selection of Amy Hubbard Marlowe to serve as executive director of the state’s de facto teachers union.
Marlowe has been serving as AEA interim executive director since January 2019.
She reacted to being appointed on a permanent basis in a written statement.
“I appreciate the vote of confidence the AEA Board has given me,” stated Marlowe.
“There’s never been a more perilous time for Alabama educators and the media should continue to focus on their heroic efforts,” she continued. “With the legislative session beginning tomorrow, my attention will be focused on the Statehouse as it has been throughout my long tenure with AEA. None of us could have predicted the events of the last year, but Alabama school employees – despite having more and more added to them each day – have risen to every challenge. AEA has a long and proud history of being the advocate for Alabama’s education employees and the guardian of the Education Trust Fund. With my selection, that work will continue and the fight will begin anew tomorrow with the start of the 2021 legislative session.”
Marlowe previously served as the assistant executive director for AEA, a role in which she was responsible for a variety of functions in the areas of Governmental Relations, Public Relations, and Research and Technology.
In addition to her duties as an AEA lobbyist, Marlowe serves as the editor of the Alabama School Journal, AEA’s official publication. Before joining the late Dr. Paul Hubbert and Dr. Joe Reed on the AEA management team, she served as an AEA UniServ director, representing local education employees at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the Sylacauga City, Talladega City and Talladega County school systems.
Additionally, Marlowe is currently listed as the treasurer of AEA’s political action committee, which reported having $3,252,759 on hand as of January 18.
