7 Things: This is where they finally get Trump, Ivey’s budgets go big, and more …

7. A drag show was canceled, but not because conservatives are worried about these guys and their insistence that kids be in the audience of the overtly-sexualized events. This event was canceled by the liberal college president at West Texas A&M University who said the event exaggerates womanhood and is basically “blackface” for women. In another twist on current events, a Christian reading event was crashed by drag queens.

6. Alabama’s basketball team isn’t the only squad at the university facing a criminal issue for a player. Defensive back Tony Mitchell was arrested for speeding (141 mph) and drug possession. During the announcement of his suspension, football head coach Nick Saban said, (t)here’s no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” and many think this is a “shot” at basketball’s head coach Nick Oats and his comments after his players were involved in a murder that saw one of them charged.

5. It has now been reported that the Department of Justice is warning the federal courts and jails that a new move to arrest 700-1,200 new people related to the Jan. 6 investigation is coming. This would double the number of people already arrested in what Attorney General Merrick Garland called, “one of the largest, most complex and most resource-intensive investigations in our history.”

4. The one-way fight over the GOP nomination for president appears to be over with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis delivering his first mild criticism of former President Donald Trump when he said his administration would be drama-free. “So, the way we run the government, I think, is no daily drama, focus on the big picture and put points on the board, and I think that’s something that’s very important.” Trump World is displeased and whiny.

3. Gov. Kay Ivey’s budget continues to push $400 individual tax rebates and a 2% pay raise for state employees. The total budget will be $2.96 billion and this is a 8.4% increase year-over-year. Agencies seeing big increases include Corrections, Public Health, and the Alabama Medicaid Agency but there will be debt repayment and monies placed in the General Fund budget reserve, as well.

2. The governor’s proposal for the Education Trust Fund Budget totals $8.8 billion, this is a 6.5% increase year-over-year.  While releasing her budget, Ivey’s office said, “From returning our taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars back to them to making historic investments in our students’ education, these budgets will help foster a strong Alabama today and a stronger Alabama tomorrow.”

1. Later today, a grand jury will probably vote to indict former President Donald Trump and that will set off a wild legal and political battle that will reverberate for years. The media push on this is entering overdrive with the Soros-backed DA being called a “politics-averse prosecutor who is preparing to take on the brash, mudslinging former president” by Politico. But… maybe not?
