7. Glitch, please. Much was rightly made of the glitch that plagued Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ entry into the presidential race but that did not stop the campaign from raising a lot of money. DeSantis’ campaign reportedly raised $8.2 million in 24 hours which is more than former President Donald Trump raised in 6 weeks after his announcement.
6. Looks like Birmingham-Southern College will get a bailout in the form of a $30 million loan as part of the creation of the Distressed Institutions of Higher Education Revolving Loan Program. Oddly enough, the program has the $30 million assigned to it that BSC said they needed.
5. Gambling localized to Greene County passed the State Senate 24-0, it would allow stupid people to bet on historic horse races at “random.” These are slot machines with extra steps, will only take money from the locals, and complete horse manure, no reason to make this only about one county.
4. The I-65 rest stop rocket may be saved after all with a new bill that would allow the state to facilitate the recreation of a Saturn 1B rocket. However, the bill removes any changes to the Alabama Monument Preservation Act, which was a sticking point for the bill. Money can be donated for the project and no state dollars are allocated.
3. Some amazingly shady stuff in Colorado as President Joe Biden is preparing to screw Alabama by stealing the Space Command HQ for Colorado. U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) even said, “[The Secretary of the Air Force] pretty much let it slip that General (James) Dickinson out in Colorado has been spending money trying to upgrade the facilities there so the facilities can be moved there.” U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) and the House Armed Services Committee are now investigating this issue.
2. House Democrats are starting to whine to the White House that their support is not guaranteed for a debt limit ceiling increase, not that they need it, as the end of the debt-ceiling mess is coming to a temporary end. The latest deal, a big L for President Joe Biden and a little W for Republicans, would move the debt ceiling fight two years down the road (after the 2024 election) and cap spending on non-military items.
1. Tax cuts and rebates are a thing. The cut to the food tax is not a full-on repeal or even a complete fade out of the tax on groceries but everyone from Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth to the liberal group Alabama Arise seem thrilled. A rebate of $150 per person and $300 per couple passes as record budgets in the General Fund and Education Trust Fund have both passed.
