New polling previews Alabama CD2 runoff, general election outcomes

New polling from Montgomery Research and Cygnal is previewing next Tuesday’s primary runoff elections in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District — and looking even further to the general election in November.

Of the 473 total people surveyed by Montgomery Research, LLC, on the GOP side, Caroleene Dobson led former State Sen. Dick Brewbaker with 42% ahead of next Tuesday’s runoff, Brewbaker at 37%, 22% of likely voters remained undecided.

In the Democratic primary, Shomari Figures was shown to have a more decisive edge over opponent State Rep. Anthony Daniels. Among 452 people surveyed, Figures held a commanding 59% to Daniels’ 24%, while 17% remained undecided.

According to their poll, if Dobson and Figures went head to head-for-the seat, Figures would hold a razor thin-lead over Dobson. (Figures 45% to Dobson’s 44%, with 16% undecided).

Also according to their poll, if Brewbaker were to defeat Dobson in the runoff, he also trails Figures with 43% to Figures’ 45% percent, with 11% undecided.

Brewbaker leads Daniels with a 43% to 41% edge, but Dobson would win out 44% to Daniels’ 40%, according to the Montgomery Research poll.

Separately, according to research from Cygnal, Brewbaker is shown to have a more favorable view among African-American voters than Dobson.

While the same research suggests that 30 percent of African-American voters are either undecided or supporting someone other than Joe Biden for president, the number of African-American voters who view Brewbaker favorably is on par with those who have a favorable view of former President Donald Trump.

In the district, inflation is shown as the top issue among African-American voters, who make up nearly half of voting age population in CD2. Both party primary runoff elections will be held next Tuesday, April 16, 2024.
