The race for the Alabama Public Service Commission has taken a strange twist as it nears its end.
Nearly two-thirds of the cash contributions for a candidate in PSC Place 2 have come from one family from Mountain Brook, according to reports filed with the Alabama Secretary of State.
The Brooke family contributed $50,000 to the campaign of Robin Litaker during the month of May. Contributions from Dixon, Dell and Nelson Brooke amounted to 63% of all cash contributions received by Litaker.
Nelson Brooke and Dell Brooke contributed $20,000 each to Litaker, while Dixon Brooke threw in $10,000.
Nelson Brooke is a noted proponent of Green New Deal-style environmental programs. He currently serves as a director of Black Warrior Riverkeepers and has a history of political contributions to far-left candidates, including Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama and Doug Jones.
The Hudson Riverkeeper, a New York-based group aligned with the Black Warrior Riverkeeper through the Waterkeeper Alliance, has joined forces with groups such as the Democratic Socialists of America, Ecosocialist Horizons, Freedom Socialist Party and Socialist Party USA.

In addition to the large cash contributions from the Brooke family, Litaker also received a $45,000 loan from Margaret Wade Johnston.
Johnston is a past chairman of the Alabama Sierra Club. The California-based Sierra Club was an early endorser of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. The environmental organization called Biden “a champion for climate justice.”
Alabama’s Republican primary election is Tuesday.
