Moore, GOP colleagues want Border Patrol chief fired

(Office of U.S. Rep. Barry Moore)

Late last month, Border Patrol reported that 2.4 million migrants have been apprehended at the southern border this fiscal year. That is the most in history and has many Republicans calling for change.

Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) is asking President Joe Biden to fire the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) commissioner for failing to secure the border.

Moore joined 15 other House Republicans in a letter, led by Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.), that called on Biden to immediately ask for the resignation of Commissioner Chris Magnus.

“We write you regarding a recent report about Chris Magnus, being absent from or seemingly unengaged during high level meetings pertaining to the immigration crisis at the southern border,” the letter says

The members of Congress highlighted how Magnus has failed at securing the border and keeping America safe.

“This behavior is highly problematic, considering the United States is experiencing the worst border-crossing crisis in this country’s history, with a record 2,378,944 encounters at the Southern Border for Fiscal Year 2022,” the letter says. “It is critical to secure our border and that require an engaged Commissioner leading CBP toward success in its three core missions of counterterrorism, border security, and trade enforcement.”

They also believe Magnus did not have the proper experience to be leading the effort to begin with.

“Commissioner Magnus has admitted that during his first ten months in office he spent more time learning the ‘many complex areas’ of CBP rather than leading on the massive issues at the border. With our borders being overrun there is simply no time for on-the-job training,” the letter says.

“Mr. President, it is imperative that the leader of CBP not only understand the border but has a deep and keen understanding of immigration policies. The CBP Commissioner should be engaged on these issues and not asleep at the wheel during the largest border crisis in U.S. History.

“Therefore, Mr. President, we ask that you request the resignation of Commissioner Magnus effective immediately to ensure our national security.”
