Alabamians living in Montgomery and surrounding areas can text MGMSAFE to 888-777 to receive free alerts on the state of the coronavirus response in their region.

The text alerts are backed by Montgomery County, the City of Montgomery and the town of Pike Road. They will be provided the local Emergency Management Agency (EMA) that oversees emergency response in both the city and county.

Officials are promising that subscribers will be sent “only the most relevant and important updates, news and information from local emergency managers and medical authorities.”

“Residents can receive immediate, critical information via text messages directly to their phones as we continue working to stop the spread of Covid-19 (Coronavirus),” said area EMA Director Christina Thornton in a release.

As of 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 24, Montgomery County has eight confirmed COVID-19 patients. Neighboring Elmore County has eight as well.

Confirmed patients in the region have included an Auburn University Montgomery professor and an employee of the Alabama Department of Education.
