Mobile International Airport opening timeline revised

(Build BFM/Contributed)

The Mobile Airport Authority has updated the timeline for the completion of the Mobile International Airport project, now targeting September 2026 as the opening date instead of spring 2026 as first announced. The change reflects a decision by city and airport officials to prioritize staying within budget over meeting the earlier schedule.

Construction on the new airport began in 2022 with the intention of relocating commercial airline services closer to downtown Mobile. This move aims to improve convenience for airport passengers.

The new terminal will initially feature five gates, with plans for expansion to twelve gates as demand grows. A parking garage with 1,250 spaces is also part of the project and is expected to be completed by March 2026.

The airport is designed to meet international standards and is expected to offer benefits such as lower airfares, more direct flights, increased tourism, and economic development opportunities in the region.

Commercial flights are anticipated to begin in October or November of the same year.
