Monday, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) announced that U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) is cosponsoring his bill that would eliminate the Department of Education.

Massie made the announcement on Twitter, saying, “Thank you to [Mo Brooks] for cosponsoring my bill to eliminate the Federal Department of Education (HR 899). The bill is one sentence: ‘The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2022.”

The Kentucky congressman first introduced the bill in 2017 and has reintroduced it every year since.

In a statement to Yellowhammer News, Brooks said he supported Massie’s bill because he believes education is something better handled on the state level.

“I support the 10th Amendment and states’ rights and have long supported eliminating all federal K-12 mandates that infringe on local and state control of education,” said Brooks in the statement. “Abolishing the U.S. Department of Education supports states’ rights and achieves that goal. If the federal government wants to block grant education dollars to states, it can do that without restrictive mandates.”
