Last week, Mexican soldiers and police took over a cargo port and a quarry owned by the Alabama based company, Vulcan Materials. The seizure of the port, which is located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, made national news.

After learning of the incident, several lawmakers – including Sens. Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville – issued statements.

“Last year, I urged President Biden to confront President López Obrador about the Mexican government’s aggression toward Vulcan Materials,” said Tuberville (R-Auburn). “As usual, President Biden buried his head in the sand.”

Britt (R-Montgomery) said the “forcible seizure of private property is unlawful and unacceptable.”

According to the Associated Press, the Mexican president said he “wants the water-filled quarry to be used as a theme park to rival the nearby XCaret park. He also wants Vulcan to build a cruise ship dock at the freight terminal.”

Unfortunately for Lopez Obrador, the theme park idea has another issue, the AP said. The quarry, where the park would be located, has pockets of water that contain a large amount of crocodiles.

The Mexican leader has offered to buy the property but Vulcan, however, has refused to sell.
