“Serving as a poll worker is an amazing opportunity to learn more about the election process, while contributing to your community,” Merrill said in the press release. “It is vital that Alabamians to step up and become poll workers!”

According to the release, there are close to 2,000 polling places in the state, which will need to be staffed before Election Day. As paid election officials, the poll workers perform  Election Day tasks.

Poll workers are required to be a registered voter in Alabama, registered to vote in that county, must attend a training session, can not be a member of a candidate’s immediate family or the second degree of kinship, and cannot be a member of a candidate’s political committee.

Students who are 16 years or old can apply to become interns at the polling locations.
