The Roberts family from Pike Road in Montgomery County has completed a six-year adventure visiting Alabama from border to border, making memories all along the way.
Matthew and Jessica Roberts, along with their children Addison and Marshall, demonstrated remarkable perseverance in achieving their goal of visiting all 67 Alabama counties over the last six years. The adventure culminated in a surprise visit to the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery.
In an interview with WSFA 12 News, Matthew Roberts explained how this six-year road trip came to be. Matthew said, “We were in Elmore County visiting my grandmother. We stopped by the courthouse; I’m not sure why. The kids were sitting outside, and I snapped a picture with the courthouse in the background. I said, ‘Hey, why don’t we go to all 67 counties?’ not really knowing how big Alabama actually is.”
Jessica Roberts also talked about the adventure. Jessica said, “It’s so beautiful. We have the mountains and the Shoals in North Alabama and the beaches in the South. We really have it all right here.”
Addison and Marshall shared their favorite stops with Davis. Addison, a seventh grader, stated, “I definitely liked Winston County because there was an Addison. I was younger then and thought that was cool.” Following the same train of thought, Marshall, now in the fifth grade, said he liked Marshall County.”
The family visited many tourist attractions across the state, including some of the locations of the 13 Alabama Ghosts, the Giant Oak Tree in Geneva County, Alabama Band tourist stops in Fort Payne, and Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro. Jessica summed it up by saying, “If there’s a tourist attraction in Alabama, we have done it and seen it.”
After visiting all 67 counties, Matthew said the family’s final goal was to meet with Governor Ivey. The Governor’s Office agreed, and the family met with Governor Ivey, sharing their Alabama scrapbook, which captured their memories in pictures.
Jessica concluded by saying, “They (Addison and Marshall) might think their parents are dorks right now, but when they have kids, they will look back, and hopefully, they will drag their kids to all 67 counties in Alabama.”
