AUBURN, Ala. — The Auburn City Council voted last week to “buy local” by awarding the $2.1 million bid submitted by Auburn-based Bailey-Harris Construction Co. to renovate Toomer’s Corner.
A locally-owned and operated business since 1979, Bailey-Harris Construction Co. has built everything from high school football stadiums to educational buildings, and even the Montgomery County Courthouse.
In 2011, Bailey-Harris Construction Co. built Auburn University’s new indoor practice facility, a $2.6 million project.
According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the project will add brick pavers and seat walls on the three corners of the intersection, raise the elevation on all four corners of the intersection, build a raised central plaza in the middle of the intersection, and replace the painted tiger paw in the middle of the intersection with a permanent concrete one.
Earlier this year, hundreds gathered to watch new oaks be planted on the corner, nearly four years after the original “Toomer’s Oaks” were poisoned by a rogue Alabama fan.
A spokesperson from Bailey-Harris told Yellowhammer Monday morning they are “thrilled to be working with the City of Auburn” to renovate Toomer’s Corner and will send out a press release with more details of their vision for the landmark later this week.
