On Tuesday, Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands defeated Republican Teddy Powell in a special election for the Alabama House of Representatives. District 10, which represents Madison and a small portion of Huntsville in the lower chamber of the State Legislature, was vacated by former State Rep. David Cole last year.
In 2022, Lands was the Democratic nominee for the same seat and lost to Cole, but will now take office after winning a high-visibility campaign.
Lands, a licensed counselor, secured 62% of the vote among 5,962 ballots cast.
On Tuesday night, Madison City Councilman Teddy Powell said the voters spoke decisively and wished the State Representative-elect well in serving a district that was a “true honor” to run for.
“Thank you to the people of District 10 who voted for me today and thank you to everyone who volunteered, canvassed, called, contributed and helped our campaign in every way,” Powell said.
“We are proud of the campaign we ran. We ran a tough and respectful race and that is something that we are incredibly proud of. Our state has so much to offer and I believe if we come together, we can accomplish great things.”
