Longleaf Recovery & Wellness will host a free continuing education training in February focused on recognizing and responding to relapse risk among individuals in recovery.
The two-hour course, titled “Understanding Relapse Risk: Recognition and Response,” is scheduled for Thursday, February 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST at 2501 International Park Drive in Birmingham.
The event will be offered as a continuing education opportunity for clinicians and treatment professionals.
According to event materials, the training examines relapse prevention through a neurobehavioral and clinical, process-oriented framework, presenting relapse as a predictable and preventable progression rather than a single incident.
The course explores how stress, emotional vulnerability and learned coping patterns can contribute to relapse risk over time.
The session emphasizes early identification of relapse warning signs, including emotional, cognitive and behavioral indicators, and outlines intervention strategies designed to support patients before substance use occurs.
The curriculum incorporates principles from neuroscience, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented treatment planning.
The training will be led by Jeff Wilson, MSW, LADAC II, QCS in training, who serves as clinical director for Cumberland Heights Young Men’s and Men’s Extended Care.
Wilson has more than 11 years of experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders across residential, partial hospitalization and extended care settings.
Event organizers say participants will leave with practical tools to enhance patient engagement, strengthen relapse prevention planning and support sustained recovery across multiple levels of care.
