Alabama’s 2025 municipal elections are drawing near, with key deadlines and election dates confirmed by the Alabama League of Municipalities’ 2025 Elections Manual and accompanying calendar.

Candidates for city office began qualifying on June 10 following publication of the official election notice by local city governments. The deadline to qualify is 5:00 p.m. on June 24, in accordance with Alabama Code § 11-46-25(g), which stipulates that qualifying ends on the fourth Tuesday in June. If qualification occurs on June 24, municipal clerks must also file candidate notifications with the Alabama Ethics Commission on the same day.

Once candidates begin raising or spending campaign funds, they must comply with the requirements of House Bill 156. This law mandates that all candidates who raise or spend more than $1,000 must file campaign finance reports.

Voters will head to the polls on August 26 to elect their city government officials. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, runoff elections will be held on September 23.

Elected candidates will officially take office on November 3, the first Monday of the month.

This year’s municipal elections follow 2021 legislation that moved local elections to non-presidential election years. As a result, some incumbent councils served five-year terms instead of the usual four. However, not all municipalities follow the same cycle. For example, Tuscaloosa held its elections on March 4 with a runoff on April 1, while Huntsville and Scottsboro conducted their municipal elections in 2024.
