Kelvin Datcher wins House District 52 special election

Kelvin Datcher will become the next State Representative for Alabama House District 52 after securing victory in a Democratic runoff election on Tuesday. Republican candidate Carlos Crum officially withdrew from the race. The seat was vacated by former longtime State Rep. John Rogers, currently on trial for wire and mail fraud related to a kickback scheme.

Datcher, deputy director of community development for the City of Birmingham, received 55% votes, while Frank Woodson, a nonprofit executive and pastor, received 45%.

The district includes parts of Birmingham, Fairfield, and Homewood.

Datcher, 54, takes on his first term in elected office after a 20-year career in public service. He previously served as chief of staff to Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson and as a policy analyst for the Jefferson County Department of Health.
