On Monday evening, the U.S. Senate confirmed Alabama Supreme Court Justice Bill Lewis to serve as a U.S. District Judge for the Middle District of Alabama, approving his nomination on a 58-40 vote

Judge Lewis’s confirmation came after another Alabamian, Hal Mooty, was also confirmed last week by the Senate as the U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama.

Lewis was nominated by President Donald Trump in September to fill the Middle District’s vacancy.

On Monday, U.S. Senator Katie Britt had the privilege of presiding over the chamber during the vote and personally delivered his nomination:

His ascension to the federal bench begins a new chapter for Lewis after a meteoritic rise through the state’s judiciary in recent years.

In 2024, Governor Kay Ivey appointed him to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, and to the Alabama Supreme Court in May 2025, where he became the first Black Republican justice in state history.

Celebration for Lewis poured in from friends and colleagues across the state on Monday evening after his final confirmation.
