Katie Britt introduces the Laken Riley Act

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt introduced legislation Tuesday night that she believes will prevent more innocent victims being killed by illegal immigrants.

Britt (R-Montgomery) was joined by Ted Budd (R-N.C.) in putting forward the Laken Riley Act, named after the 22-year-old college nursing student recently killed on the campus of the University of Georgia by an illegal immigrant.

The suspected killer, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is from Venezuela. He had a previous arrest record in New York and currently faces extensive charges in Georgia.

Laken Riley’s namesake bill, which is the Senate version of a similar measure passed in the House, will requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal immigrants who commit theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting offenses and mandate that those who commit such crimes are detained until they are removed from the United States.

“Make no mistake, Laken Riley’s heartbreaking murder was a direct, preventable consequence of willful open border policies by President Biden and his administration,” Britt told Fox News. “This commonsense legislation would ensure ICE detains and deports criminal illegal aliens, so more innocent American families do not have to face this kind of unimaginable tragedy.”

“Sen. Schumer should bring this bill to the Senate floor immediately,” she added.

Britt also joined Fox News’ “Kudlow” to criticize President Joe Biden’s response to the illegal immigration crisis.

“Unfortunately he continues to put Americans last, and he puts this facilitation of mass first,” Britt said. “And the Laken Riley tragedy puts it into focus. And the fact that when he gets her name wrong he doesn’t take the time to actually correct that and properly grieve with her family. President Trump did, but what he does is he apologizes to her killer and it’s a total disgrace.”
