State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) has once again called out the mayor of Birmingham, Randall Woodfin, for his lack of action in combating the ongoing violent crime epidemic in his city.

Givan, who is challenging Woodfin in the 2025 Birmingham mayoral race, is making the argument that she has done more to deal with the issue of gun violence than the current mayor.

The state lawmaker discussed the problem Tuesday on WVNN’s “The Dale Jackson Show.”

“I’m gonna be honest. I usually never talk about my opponent, but what I am gonna say on this show, I’m more upset about the fact that this CEO of the city would take a victory lap with regards to the Glock switches,” Givan said. “I’m very disappointed in the whole administration, because they did absolutely nothing. They did not ask for help. I did myself. Representative Tillman, Sellers, and Hendrix, we went to the Speaker. We begged the Speaker, ‘Listen, Birmingham is a blood bath every day. Can we try to move this Glock switch bill?’ We did that. I initiated that. It’s verifiable.”

Givan elaborated on her issue with Woodfin taking credit for the bill’s passage.

“Nobody at City Hall, nobody said one word to fight this issue,” she continued. “And I am the only person in this race who put myself all the way out there to stand up to City Hall on this, and it’s verifiable. There we go, do a victory lap. To do a victory lap, absolutely not. And I am going to start cutting into all of that foolery. And I thank you for mentioning this, because you did nothing.”

The Birmingham native also explained why crime has been such a challenge in the area.

“I’m close with this,” Givan said. “Birmingham only has 300 and something sworn law enforcement officers. We have neighborhoods up here that are barricaded. Every street has concrete barricades. Why? Because they don’t have enough officers to police.”
