MONTGOMERY — Mobile County’s John Skipper on Saturday defeated State Rep. Andrew Sorrell (R-Muscle Shoals) to become senior vice chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
The election came during ALGOP’s 2021 Winter Meeting. Skipper fills the seat vacated by John Wahl’s ascension to chairman of the state party.
Wahl, from Limestone County, was elected by acclamation after no other nomination was made for the chairmanship.
There were 362 votes cast by members of the ALGOP state executive committee in the senior vice chair election; Skipper received 53% of the vote compared to Sorrell’s 47%.
Sorrell had been serving as vice chairman of the party for the Fourth and Fifth Congressional Districts. Skipper had been serving as ALGOP vice chairman for the First and Second Congressional Districts.
Skipper is also the father of Tripp Skipper, who launched now-U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) successful campaign in the 2020 cycle and served on Tuberville’s transition committee.
Other ALGOP officers elected on Saturday are as follows:
- Bill Harris, vice chair for for AL-01 and AL-02
- Pat Wilson, vice chair for AL-03, AL-06 and AL-07
- Josh Dodd, vice chair for AL-04 and AL-05
- Carol Jahns, secretary
- Sallie Bryant, treasurer
