It’s a good year to be a Jacksonville State University Gamecock.

The northeast Alabama school’s football team is currently 9-1 on the season and ranked No. 3 in the FCS (formally D1AA), and their band — the Marching Southerners — has been tearing up the exhibition circuit throughout the fall, in addition to their halftime shows, which have been a source of pride for the school and community for the last half-century.

“Comprised of students from all over the country, the Southerners perform for thousands each season — sending chills up the spine and tears down the face,” the band’s website proclaims.

But this past weekend, it was one of the Southerners’ own who ended up having tears of joy rolling down her face.

Former Marching Southerner Nic Burgess, who graduated last year, managed to sneak into the drumline and enlist his former bandmates to help him propose to his girlfriend, Kara Mullinax, who just so happens to be the drum major.

The whole scheme was captured on video and posted on YouTube Sunday under the title “Best Wedding Proposal EVER!”
