Is Walt Maddox trying to help Kay Ivey by pointing out how successful Alabama has been recruiting jobs?

If you are an Alabama Democrat running for governor you have to argue the state needs gambling and/or the lottery, and more ObamaCare (in the form of a massive Medicaid expansion).

All two of these things are a part of Walt Maddox’s campaign for governor and they led his former Democrat failed candidates to massive defeats at the hand of Robert Bentley. Maddox is also facing a Republican president with a booming national economy and a record or near-record unemployment rate for the Republican-led state.

So what is he to do? Complain about jobs?

Why this matters:

His quote is ready for Gov. Kay Ivey to pull out and use against him in a political ad: “Let’s take the last 21 years, in the last 21 years in the state of Alabama, we recruited Mercedes, Airbus, Austal, Honda, Hyundai, you name the defense industry, Boeing whatever it may be, we recruited it to Alabama.”

He goes on to start complaining about the incentives that brought these jobs here, which are mostly tax abatements, site acquisition and preparation, which is usually tied to job creation. Does this mean he wants to end them? Can he point to failed plans that have lost money and not created jobs? Where incentives have been squandered?

I assume he wants to end them, but he’s not being clear. So if this is what he wants to do, he should be clear, say so, and let the people decide if that is the vision he wants.
