Huntsville shines as premier sports destination attracting $50 million in tourism

The Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) reported that Huntsville closed out 2024 with a historic year in sports tourism, hosting 68 major events that collectively brought over $50 million in economic impact to the city.

The (CVB) sports tourism team achieved remarkable success, generating $51,303,193 in economic revenue and creating more than 76,000 hotel room nights.

Joel Lamp, sports development manager for the CVB, attributed the achievement to teamwork, noting, “2024 showed what sports can do in Huntsville.”

Among the year’s highlights was the Conference USA men’s and women’s basketball championships, which were held in Huntsville for the first time and produced $3.2 million in economic impact.

Mark Russell, executive director of the Huntsville Sports Commission (HSC), called the year “exciting” and commended the events for elevating Huntsville’s profile while significantly benefiting the local hospitality industry.

Key Highlights of 2024 Sports Tourism in Huntsville:

  • USA Table Tennis National Championships: Hosted for the first time in Huntsville, this event earned recognition as a Champion of Economic Impact by Sports Destination Management magazine.
  • Basketball Showcases: The city hosted the Conference USA championships and welcomed Alabama back for the Rocket City Classic, with four games broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
  • NJCAA Division II Soccer Championships: Held at Spencer Sports Complex and Joe Davis Stadium, the event generated over 2,000 room nights.
  • Ditto Landing Growth: Featured the Major League Fishing Toyota Series Championship.
  • NCAA Cross Country Events: Continued its streak of NCAA postseason cross country races, securing events through 2027, including the Division II national championship in that year.
  • Record-breaking Huntsville Marathon: Sold out with 4,000 participants.
  • Rocket City Spring Shootout: Hosted Alabama and Tennessee women’s soccer teams for a spring game.
  • Association of Chief Executives of Sport Annual Meeting: Brought top sports industry leaders to Huntsville.

In total, the year’s efforts generated $3.8 million in taxes for the city. With a strong foundation set in 2024, Huntsville aims to achieve even greater milestones in sports tourism in the coming year.
