“Treated my staff to breakfast from Chick-fil-a this morning to support free speech and family values. Also, chicken biscuits are delicious.” That was the caption Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard attached to the above picture late last week in response to several mayors around the country threatening to block Chick-fil-A from building in their cities.
“Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago’s values,” said Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel. “I said I would do everything I can to stop them,” added Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. “And that was mostly using the bully pulpit of being mayor of the city and getting public support.”
All of this of course is in response to Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy’s interview with the Baptist Press in which he said he supported “the biblical definition of the family unit.”
Speaker Hubbard quickly came out in support of Chick-fil-A’s first amendment rights and expressed appreciation for their stance on family values. As a result, he will appear on CNN’s “Newsroom” tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. central to discuss the whole Chick-fil-A ordeal.
Prior to that, he will also be on Birmingham talk radio at 6:30 a.m. with 100WAPI’s Matt Murphy.
This is shaping up to be a pretty solid press week for the Speaker as the CNN and Murphy Show appearances come right on the heels of his election to the Chairmanship of the Southern Legislative Conference.
