Hightower releases ad featuring him campaigning for Trump in 2016

Former State Senator Bill Hightower (R-Mobile) released a new ad for his congressional campaign on Monday that features footage of him campaigning for then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016.

“I was proud to stand in support of President Trump in 2016 and I’m proud to stand with him today. Four years ago I said ‘we need this man,’ and the past few weeks have only proven that statement right,” said Hightower in remarks accompanying the release of the ad.

Hightower and Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl are currently in a runoff for the Republican nomination for Alabama’s First Congressional District which encompasses much of southwest Alabama, including Mobile and Baldwin counties. U.S. Representative Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope) currently holds the seat but unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate instead of seeking reelection.

The Hightower campaign says the ad is being launched as part of a new digital advertising push.

The footage of Hightower campaigning for Trump is dated October 26, 2016.

Notably, many Republican officials around the country rescinded their support for Trump after the Washington Post on October 8, 2016, published a video recorded in 2005 of Trump saying uncouth things about women in the television industry.

The video does not appear to have deterred Bill Hightower from voting for Trump. In Hightower’s remarks supporting the Republican nominee, he lists the differences in the platform Trump was supporting versus the one supported by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“One represents God, and one doesn’t. One is pro-life, one isn’t. One is pro-economy, one is not,” Hightower advises the public in the recording featured in Monday’s new ad.

President Donald Trump currently holds a nationwide 89% approval rating among GOP primary voters according to the polling company Morning Consult. The number could likely be even higher in Alabama, where Trump has some of his highest net-approval ratings in any of the 50 states.

Voters go to the ballot box on July 14.
